Unlock hidden features on your GoPro action camera with GoPro Labs! This experimental program allows users to download an optional firmware update to their GoPros to try out custom features. Many are in beta mode and some have restrictions, but this is a GoPro-supported program that adds new features. It doesn’t take any away. Originally, GoPro Labs was only available for the GoPro Hero 8. But as of January 2021, Labs is now compatible with the Hero 9, Hero 7, and Max cameras. There are also several brand new features:
New Features
- IMU Motion Triggers
- USB Power Triggers – Mostly for dashcam when shooting in the car
- Maximum Shutter Angle
- Exposure Lock
- Archive Mode – Prevents a user from changing camera settings; all they can do is press the record button.
- Extensions
- HERO8/HERO9 Only – Livestreaming via QR Code
- HERO9 Only – GPS Time Synchronization
How to Install GoPro Labs?
It is the same procedure to install GoPro Labs on the Hero 7, 8, 9, and Max cameras. Note that you cannot install this firmware via the GoPro smartphone app. It must be installed manually.
- Remove microSD card from GoPro.
- Insert microSD into SD card adapter and use a card reader to insert into a computer.
- Go to GoPro.com/Labs website and download firmware for the GoPro you’ll be using.
- Unzip the downloaded file. Copy the file to the root of your GoPro SD card. Eject SD card and insert it back into GoPro.
- Power on GoPro and wait for firmware to be installed (should take under 1 minute).
How to Use GoPro Labs
Once enabled on your camera, your GoPro will be able to read QR codes. These QR codes give the GoPro commands to follow. As a result, there are 4 ways to generate your QR codes:
- Use the QRControl App (iPhone or Android).
- Use GoPro Labs Mobile Site
- Use GoPro Labs Desktop Site
- Save the QR Code as an image and print or save the image to your smartphone to use later.
*When shooting on the go, bookmark the Mobile site on your browser, and/or save QR code as an image to access if you don’t have a cell signal.
